The Sokoto State Government is facing mounting criticism after reports emerged that it distributed small food items to residents despite allegedly budgeting N1 billion for its Ramadan feeding programme.
The controversy erupted after political commentator Mallam Jabir disclosed details of the initiative on social media platform X.
“Ramadan feeding programme in Sokoto State. The Sokoto State government budgeted 1 billion naira for the programme,” he wrote.
The claim quickly gained traction after another X user, OurFaveOnlineDoc, shared photos purportedly showing the distributed items.
The images, which have since gone viral, allegedly showed residents receiving small portions of garri, kuli-kuli and sachets of drinking water — items many users described as inadequate compared to the reported budget.
Questioning the programme’s value, the user wrote: “Please look at these pictures… This is the government-funded Ramadan feeding programme in Sokoto. Sokoto state govt claims they budgeted 1 billion naira for what you are seeing here.”
He further alleged mismanagement of public funds, accusing officials of corruption.
The development has triggered widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians demanding transparency and accountability from the Sokoto State Government over the utilisation of the funds.
Critics have questioned how such a large budget could translate into what they described as “meagre” food items, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.
However, some users have urged caution, calling for proper verification of the claims and a detailed breakdown of how the funds were allocated and spent.
As the debate intensifies, residents say the Sokoto State Government may face increasing pressure to provide clarity on the programme to address growing public concerns.
