Sunday Mba, a former Super Eagles midfielder, has expressed his confidence that the Nigerian national team will qualify from their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations group alongside hosts Cote d’Ivoire.
The draw ceremony held in Abidjan on Thursday night placed Jose Peseiro’s side in Group A alongside the hosts, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau.
Mba, who played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s 2013 AFCON victory against Burkina Faso, believes that the Super Eagles have a good chance of progressing from the group.
He, however, cautioned the team against complacency, stating that all of their opponents are well-prepared and pose a threat.
According to the former Enugu Rangers star, Nigeria is the team to beat at the 2023 AFCON, and their qualification from Group A is just the beginning.
He further emphasized that the team has the best strikers around and, with a balanced team, they have nothing to fear.
Mba’s optimism is not unfounded. Nigeria has a rich footballing history and has won the Africa Cup of Nations three times.
With a talented squad comprising of young and experienced players, the Super Eagles have the potential to go all the way in the tournament.
It remains to be seen how the team will perform, but one thing is certain – they have the backing of their former player and a whole nation behind them.
