Former United States President Donald Trump has won the Republican Iowa caucuses, which puts him in the lead to secure the party’s nomination for the 2024 presidential race.
Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis were also among the top contenders, but Trump’s victory was widely anticipated. The Iowa caucuses are often seen as an important precursor to other primaries in the US, and Trump’s win here could give him an edge in the race.
Despite facing legal challenges, Trump’s strong grip on the Republican party remains unchanged, with many voters citing his ability to address their concerns about the economy, immigration, and global instability.
“We need something different than what we’re doing now. It’s not working. I was making more money than I ever have, and now I’m broker than I’ve ever been,” David Brunell, a 32-year-old Trump supporter, told Al Jazeera before the caucuses.
Meanwhile, Vivek Ramaswamy has endorsed Donald Trump after suspending his presidential campaign tonight following a fourth-place finish in Iowa.
“There’s no path for me to be the next president absent things that we don’t want to see happen in this country,” he told supporters.
