The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo Central senatorial district has adopted a consensus aspirant for the September 21 governorship election in Edo State.
The aspirant, Asue Ighodalo, Uptown Press reports, is a Lagos-based lawyer and former Chairman of Sterling Bank Plc. It is believed that he is backed by the outgoing governor, Godwin Obaseki, whose constitutional two-term limit will expire this year.
The party’s decision to back Ighodalo followed the Edo Central PDP caucus meeting held in Uromi on Thursday.
The ruling party issued a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Archbishop Anthony Okosun; Secretary, Luckson Ogedegbe and Legal Adviser, Barrister Paul Itua.
The statement confirmed that the adoption of Barrister Asue Ighodalo is without prejudice to the right of any other aspirant to pursue his or her aspiration.
Uptown Press reports that, Ighodalo has purchased expression of interest and nomination form to run for the office of the Governor in the Edo State 2024 Gubernatorial Elections at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja.
In the meantime, Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has accused his principal of being against his governorship ambition.
