In a landmark move to promote women’s economic empowerment, the Edo State Government, in collaboration with the Federal Government, has unveiled an ambitious initiative aimed at uplifting 54,000 women across the State.
The initiative, which aligns with the 2025 International Women’s Day theme, “Accelerate Action: For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment,” was announced by Chief Marie Olabisi Idaomi, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, during a press conference in Benin City on Thursday.
The Commissioner noted that as part of the government’s drive for a more inclusive future, a targeted rural women empowerment programme, including mobile training units and microloan schemes, will be rolled out to support 18,000 rural women across all eighteen local government areas (LGAs) of Edo State between 2025 and 2026.
Chief Idaomi restated the administration’s commitment to addressing gender inequalities through a range of strategic interventions under the leadership of Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo. She described the announcement as both a celebration of women’s achievements and a call to action to bridge existing gender gaps in various sectors.
“Today is not just a celebration of the remarkable achievements of women in Edo State and beyond but also a moment to reflect on the challenges that persist and the urgent actions required to bridge gender gaps across all sectors,” the Commissioner stated.
She highlighted several initiatives that have already been set in motion within the first five months of the current administration such as:
Combating Gender-Based Violence (GBV): The government has enhanced legal frameworks and support systems for survivors of GBV, with plans underway to establish mobile courts for expedited justice. Awareness campaigns have also been intensified to discourage gender-based violence and hold perpetrators accountable.
Economic Empowerment: The State has commenced the reactivation of skills acquisition programmes across all 18 LGAs, offering women entrepreneurial training, access to micro-finance, and skills development initiatives. A major collaboration with the Federal Government will provide economic empowerment opportunities for 54,000 women.
Increased Political Participation: Efforts are being made to boost women’s representation in leadership roles through mechanisms that coordinate women’s political engagement at the grassroots level.
As part of the government’s pledge to accelerate action towards gender inclusivity, Chief Idaomi outlined several upcoming initiatives aimed at closing inequality gaps:
Rural Women Empowerment Drive: Mobile training units and microloan schemes will be deployed to empower 18,000 rural women between 2025 and 2026.
Gender-Responsive Budgeting: The government plans to increase allocations for women-focused programmes by 30% in the 2026 fiscal year, ensuring enhanced funding for healthcare, education, and economic development initiatives.
Zero Tolerance for GBV: Stricter penalties will be enforced against perpetrators of gender-based violence, alongside the provision of psychosocial support for survivors.
Inclusive Policy Framework: Multi-sectoral partnerships with private sector stakeholders, civil society organisations, and development partners will be strengthened to drive sustainable gender equality interventions.
Chief Idaomi reiterated that the time to uplift and empower rural women is now, urging collective action to break societal barriers and foster gender equality.
“The time for action is now! We must work collectively to break barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create a society where gender equality is not just an aspiration but a reality. As we celebrate the achievements of women today, let us also reaffirm our resolve to accelerate action toward a future where every woman and girl in Edo State is empowered to fulfil her potential.” She concluded.
