The spokesperson to the Governor of Kano State, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, was captured on camera removing the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) flag from the Kano State Government House, signalling the governor’s formal break with the party.
The footage, recorded by newsmen at the seat of power in Kano, shows Dawakin Tofa overseeing the removal of the party insignia shortly after the governor announced his decision to dump the NNPP, citing what he described as an irredeemable internal crisis within the party.
The development marks a decisive end to the governor’s association with the platform that brought him to office and has intensified political speculation across the state and beyond. Party flags at government houses are often viewed as powerful symbols of political allegiance, making their removal a clear public statement of disengagement.
In explaining his exit, the governor said the NNPP had become embroiled in deep-seated internal conflicts that could no longer be resolved, a situation he argued was distracting from governance and service delivery.
While no new political destination has been officially announced, the dramatic removal of the NNPP flag has fuelled expectations of an imminent realignment, particularly as Kano remains a key battleground in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
