The Edo State Police Command has intensified its offensive against criminal elements, launching a series of coordinated operations that include house-to-house arrests of identified cultists. The renewed crackdown, which aims to curb cult-related activities across the State, has already led to the arrest of 28 suspects following targeted raids in Benin City.
According to a statement issued by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Joel Yamu, the operation took place on Tuesday, 4th June 2025, between 4:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., with officers storming known blackspots and hideouts across the City. Of the 28 individuals apprehended, 19 were found to be directly implicated in criminal activities and have since been charged to court.
In a further move to dismantle cultist networks, the Command has commenced door-to-door arrests of identified members of secret cults. Three suspects arrested in various parts of the state reportedly confessed to being members of the Eiye and Aye confraternities. They too have been arraigned in court.
Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, reiterated the Command’s commitment to ridding Edo State of cultism. He urged cult members to renounce their affiliations and embrace a law-abiding lifestyle. “We will continue to use every lawful means to track and prosecute anyone involved in cultism,” he stated. “Those who refuse to desist should be prepared to face the full weight of the law under the Edo State Secret Cult and Other Related Activities (Prohibition) Law.”
