Four officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) are currently in police custody in Edo State following accusations of assault that led to the tragic death of Mr. Henry Osewenkhai, a bolt driver.
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the arrests today, detailing that the incident occurred after Osewenkhai had completed a trip to a popular hotel on Sapele Road in Benin City. Allegedly, an altercation ensued involving the bolt driver and several individuals, including NSCDC officers.
Eyewitness reports from Festus Nwabuzor described a distressing scene of brutality, prompting outcry and peaceful protests with signs demanding justice for Osewenkhai. The victim, described as a happily married father of two, succumbed to injuries sustained during the altercation, leading to public outrage and calls for accountability.
Police Public Relations Officer, Yamu, expressed dismay over the incident, emphasising the commitment to a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Osewenkhai’s death. The PPRO assured both the victim’s family and the public of the authorities’ dedication to ensuring justice is served.
