At least seven people have been killed and six others injured following a violent communal clash in Edo State, authorities confirmed on Sunday.
According to the Edo State Police Command, the incident occurred on February 21 in the Ovia North-East Local Government Area, between the Gbelemonti and Maidoti communities. Police were immediately alerted to the situation, prompting a swift response from the Iguobazuwa Police Division, supported by the Nigerian Army and local vigilante groups.
Moses Yamu, the Police Command’s spokesman, stated that the combined security team transported casualties to nearby medical facilities, where seven victims were declared dead and six others were treated for their injuries. The authorities have assured the public that the situation is now under control, with security forces continuing to monitor the area.
“The cause of the clash remains under investigation,” said Yamu, a Chief Superintendent of Police. “The Commissioner of Police, Betty Otimenyin, has vowed that every effort will be made to uncover the circumstances behind this tragedy.”
In his statement, Yamu described the incident as “avoidable” and urged community members to seek peaceful resolutions to disputes rather than resorting to violence. The police continue to appeal for calm while the investigation unfolds.
