Authorities in Ogun State have apprehended eight secondary school pupils over alleged involvement in cult activities, raising fresh concerns about the growing influence of secret groups among teenagers.
The pupils, all male and aged between 15 and 16, were arrested following a complaint lodged by school officials at the Ifo Police Division. Reports indicated that the group had been engaging in extortion and intimidating fellow students.
According to the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Omolola Odutola, the arrests were made on Friday, 21 March 2025, at around 12:05pm. The suspects were identified as Omolaso Waris (16), Bennett Bolawatife (15), Aluko Taiwo (15), Akinola Ifeoluwa (16), Azeez Hassan (16), Kilani Babatunde (also known as ‘Soldier’, 16), Kehinde Aluko (15), and Fasedemi Samuel (16).
Preliminary police investigations suggest the pupils were recruited into the so-called ‘Future Guys Cult Group’ (F.T.G.) by two older students in Senior Secondary School 1 (SSS 1), identified as Ebenezer Ope and Ebenezer Tobi. Ope is said to be the group’s leader.
In a statement, the police assured the public that a thorough investigation had commenced to determine the full extent of cult activities within the school. The arrested pupils will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) after initial inquiries.
“The Commissioner of Police has directed that the students be presented before him on the next working day for further questioning. Measures will also be put in place to offer counselling and mentorship to deter further involvement in cultism,” CSP Odutola said.
Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, reaffirmed the force’s commitment to tackling cultism in schools and called on parents, educators, and community leaders to play an active role in curbing the menace.
