The recent arrest and conviction of a teenage internet fraudster, Victor Odeh, by the Kaduna chapter of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has sparked outrage on social media.
Along with four other undergraduates, Victor was found guilty of internet fraud and sentenced to two years imprisonment or a N150,000 fine each by Justice Darius Khobo of the Kaduna State High Court.
The EFCC revealed that the boys were apprehended in a sting operation in Kaduna after an investigation exposed their involvement in creating fake accounts on various social media platforms to defraud unsuspecting victims, many of whom were foreigners.
Victor Odeh’s specific charge was related to cheating by impersonation, where he allegedly presented himself as a white man from the USA to deceive and cheat a victim on Facebook.
The conviction of such a young individual has raised concerns among netizens, with many lamenting how Victor got involved in such criminal activities at his age.
Some pointed out the failure of the system in supporting young individuals like him, while others praised the EFCC for apprehending criminals like Victor and bringing them to justice.
