Governor Duoye Diri has established a six-member Judicial Panel of Enquiry to delve into the violence that occurred in the Nembe-Bassambiri community on February 15, resulting in the tragic deaths of three individuals from the region.
The incident, which transpired approximately six months ago, has prompted the Governor to inaugurate the panel on Tuesday at the Yenagoa Government House.
Represented by Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Governor Diri tasked the panel with meticulously investigating both the underlying and immediate causes of the disturbances in Nembe-Bassambiri that culminated in the fatal events of February 15.
Governor Diri set a three-week timeline for the panel to conclude its investigation, including presenting its findings report to the government for appropriate actions.
The panel will be led by former Chief Judge of the state, Justice Margaret Akpomiemie (retd.), and Mr. Diepreye Omubo from the state Ministry of Justice will act as the secretary.
Other members include Fedude Zimughan, Mrs. Josephine Igodo, Love Amaseimogha, and a representative from the National Human Rights Commission, Bayelsa office, Vining Goselle.
Deputy Governor Ewhrudjakpo emphasized that the panel’s chairperson and members were meticulously selected based on their distinguished backgrounds and extensive expertise to ensure a comprehensive execution of their crucial assignment.
A statement issued by the deputy governor’s media aide, Mr. Doubara Atasi, expressed the importance of the inquiry, stating, “We are going to delve into the circumstances surrounding the deaths and those accountable for these tragic events. This is essential because every life holds value.”
