A consultant with the Oil Sustainability Programme (OSP) under the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Brenda Enose Ataga, yesterday, disclosed that out of the 36 million households in Nigeria, only two percent uses Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) in the country.
She said this during a flag off of an awareness training programme on Oil For Sustainability held in Benin City, Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.
Mrs. Ataga said that the awareness campaign has become imperative considering the immense benefits.
She said the use of clean cooking gas guarantees safe and clean environment because it minimizes the felling of trees.
She said with the awareness campaign, it is believed that the number of those using LPG in the country will increase astronomically while cost will be saved.
Earlier in his opening remark, Chairman, Senate Committee on Gas, Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, said the initiative to promote the use of LPG as a clean cooking fuel through the Oil for Sustainability Programme, is commendable and aligns perfectly with the federal government’s commitment to environmental stewardship and energy sustainability.
Senator Jarigbe, represented by Mr. Joseph Ulom, added that the awareness programme holds immense potential to empower communities with the knowledge and resources needed to make informed choices for a cleaner, healthier future.
Jarigbe said by advocating for the adoption of LPG, they are not only promoting sustainable energy practices but also contributing to improving air quality and enhancing public health.
On his part, Dr. Gasem Mohammed Falltah, from Saudi Arabia, said that, the use of clean cooking gas is achievable in Nigeria.
He said the relationship between the two countries dated back in history adding that both countries are still members of OPEC.
Falltah commended the people of Oredo for buying into the idea and urged them to sustain same.
