In Benin City, a legal battle is currently brewing as ex-governorship aspirant, Mr Peter Okoeguale, has dragged Dr. Azemhe Azena, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) guber candidate, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before a Federal High Court.
The case, which was filed through Mr Okoeguale’s counsel, Daniel Noah Osa-Ogbegie Esq, seeks to challenge the nomination of Mr Azemhe Azena as the NNPP candidate for the Edo Governorship election scheduled to hold on September 21, 2024.
Mr Okoeguale’s counsel is seeking a declaration that the nomination of Mr Azemhe Azena is invalid, wrongful, and unconstitutional as it contravenes the provisions of the electoral Act 2022. Furthermore, he is seeking an order from the court declaring Mr Peter Okoeguale as the rightful candidate of NNPP for the Governorship election.
The legal action also seeks to nullify the nomination and return of Mr Azemhe Azena as the NNPP candidate for the Governorship election scheduled to hold on September 21, 2024. Additionally, Mr Osa-Ogbegie is requesting the court to award the sum of ten million naira as general damages against Mr Azemhe Azena and NNPP.
Interestingly, 14 out of the 18 local government chapters of NNPP in Edo state have thrown their weight behind Mr Peter Okoeguale’s legal action to reclaim his mandate.
This development, Uptown Press gathered, suggests that Mr Okoeguale’s challenge has gained considerable support within the party and could have far-reaching implications for the party’s chances in the forthcoming Governorship election.
