Earlier today, several members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) narrowly avoided tragedy when a section of the female hostel wall at the NYSC orientation camp in Ekiti State collapsed.
The collapse occurred as Corps members were preparing for their morning routines, specifically during their scheduled time for bathing.
According to eyewitness reports, the collapse involved the bathroom wall, trapping several corps members under the rubble. Prompt action from their fellow male corps members, who quickly rushed to their aid, ensured that those affected were swiftly rescued and taken to the camp’s clinic for immediate medical attention.
Confirming the incident, an anonymous NYSC official stated that only two corps members were directly affected by the collapse. “They are currently recuperating at the camp’s clinic and receiving necessary medical care,” the official assured.
Sources within the NYSC camp revealed that there have been longstanding concerns about the state of the camp’s infrastructure, particularly the dilapidated condition of the hostels. Despite repeated appeals from NYSC leadership in Ekiti State for renovations, these calls have reportedly gone unanswered.
In response to the incident, the official urged parents and guardians not to panic, emphasizing that the situation did not have any serious negative consequences for the affected corps members beyond initial injuries. He reassured that the NYSC management was closely monitoring the situation and providing support to those affected.
The affected corps members, who are undergoing a mandatory three-week orientation program in Ekiti State, are expected to continue their activities in the camp once they have recovered sufficiently.
