Protesters in Jos, participating in the nationwide “End Bad Governance” movement, have issued a stark warning to local business owners: join the protest on Monday, August 5, or shut down their businesses.
This ultimatum comes in response to President Bola Tinubu’s Sunday broadcast, which protesters claim failed to address Nigeria’s pressing issues.
The warning was reported today by Daily Trust. Protesters emphasized that the move aims to prevent potential damage to properties during the demonstrations. They have vowed to mobilize even more people to join the protest, highlighting their dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the country’s challenges.
“We need everyone out on the streets tomorrow. No business as usual,” chanted the protesters, who included both adults and young people. They carried placards, leaves, and flags from various countries, marching through the streets to spread their message.
The primary demands of the protesters include the removal of the fuel subsidy and urgent action to address the nation’s insecurity. In his broadcast, President Tinubu ruled out the return of the fuel subsidy, despite acknowledging the pain it has caused. He described the subsidy and multiple foreign exchange systems as detrimental to Nigeria’s economic progress.
“I, therefore, took the painful yet necessary decision to remove fuel subsidies and abolish multiple foreign exchange systems which had constituted a noose around the economic jugular of our Nation and impeded our economic development and progress,” President Tinubu stated.
Despite the tension, the protests in Plateau State have remained largely peaceful, with no significant incidents of violence reported. The organizers are hopeful that the peaceful nature of their protest will continue as they strive to make their voices heard.
The situation remains tense as business owners and residents brace for the potential impact of Monday’s protest.
