Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of General Godwin Abbe, describing his death as both a shocking and significant loss to Edo State and the nation. The late General, who passed away at a private hospital in Abuja on Wednesday, was just weeks away from celebrating his 75th birthday.
In a statement released by his press secretary, Governor Okpebholo acknowledged the immense contributions of the late Abbe to Nigeria’s military and public service sectors. The retired General’s distinguished career included serving as Military Governor of Akwa Ibom and Rivers states, as well as holding high-ranking positions in the federal government, including Minister of Defence and Minister of Interior.
Governor Okpebholo conveyed his condolences to the family of the deceased and to the people of Edo State, highlighting Abbe’s unwavering commitment to the country. He said, “General Abbe dedicated his life to serving our nation. His loss is not only felt deeply within Edo State but across the entire country. We will miss his leadership and wisdom.”
The Governor further prayed for God to grant the late General eternal rest, and for strength and fortitude for his family and the people of Edo State during this difficult time. Family sources indicated that General Abbe had been battling a prolonged illness before his death in the nation’s capital.
The late General’s passing marks the end of an era of exemplary military and public service, and his legacy of patriotism is expected to be remembered for years to come.
