Civil society organisations (CSOs) in Edo State have called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to intervene in alleged illegal activities occurring at local government secretariats across the State.
The CSOs expressed concerns about the role of the police, urging them to uphold the rule of law and safeguard all levels of government.
Speaking at a press briefing in Benin City yesterday, representatives of the group, Emmanuel Ogbidi and Kola Edokpayi, criticised the escalating conflict between the state’s local government council chairmen and Governor Monday Okpebholo. The group warned that the situation could spiral into a full-blown crisis if not addressed urgently, urging the state’s Commissioner of Police to act decisively.
The CSOs condemned the suspension of all 18 local government chairmen and their deputies by the state House of Assembly, describing it as an affront to democracy and governance. They implored Governor Okpebholo to allow the chairmen to serve out their terms in office, arguing that such measures were detrimental to grassroots development.
“Rather than resorting to suspension and impeachment tactics through councillors, we urge the governor to engage constructively with the council chairmen and their deputies. Let them align with his administration’s five-point agenda for the collective benefit of the state,” the group stated.
The CSOs called for collaboration between the governor and the chairmen, emphasising that the latter were willing to contribute to the development of Edo State. They urged the governor to prioritise dialogue over coercion, noting that a harmonious relationship would enhance the delivery of democracy’s dividends to citizens.
In a strong appeal to Governor Okpebholo, the group said, “Do not let those with selfish political interests derail your administration. Align your actions with the principles of democracy and the rule of law. Be a leader whose legacy inspires pride, not shame.”
Referencing President Bola Tinubu’s recent remarks encouraging cooperation with local governments, the CSOs reminded the governor of the president’s call for grassroots development. They insisted that respecting the autonomy of local government councils was crucial for achieving this goal.
Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), SP Moses Joel Yamu, for comments on the allegations were unsuccessful. Although the PRO requested a copy of the press statement, no response had been received as of the time of reporting.
The CSOs concluded by reaffirming their commitment to supporting the police in maintaining law and order but warned against any perceived complicity in undermining democratic structures in the state.
