The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Omo N’Oba Ewuare II Ogidigan, has officially brought the 2024 Igue Festival to a close with a poignant thanksgiving service at the revered Holy Aruosa Cathedral in Benin City, Edo State.
The event, held to honour both the Almighty and the ancestors, marked a fitting conclusion to the weeks-long celebration.
Accompanied by his queens, members of the royal family, high-ranking palace chiefs, and numerous dignitaries, the Oba’s procession was a vibrant display of cultural heritage and unity. Key figures in the royal entourage included Enigie (Dukes), Edionwere (traditional titleholders), and priests and priestesses representing various deities. Additionally, the market women’s group, led by Josephine Ibhaguezejele, also participated in the significant event.
During the service, the presiding priest of Holy Aruosa Cathedral, Igbinoghoduwa Edebiri, delivered a moving sermon, urging the congregation to persist in their faith and prayers despite life’s many challenges.
The head priest of the Edo National Church of God further reinforced this message, reminding worshippers that both the Almighty and their ancestors would continue to protect them from harm, as long as they remain devoted in their daily supplications.
Oba Ewuare II, surrounded by the harmonious voices of the cathedral choir and the cheers of the congregation, danced gracefully to the altar in reverence, offering his heartfelt thanks for the success of the festival. The thanksgiving ceremony served as both a spiritual reflection and a celebration of the enduring traditions of the Benin Kingdom.
