The Edo State Government is rapidly advancing the construction and renovation of 100 primary and junior secondary school projects across the State’s 18 Local Government Areas. The initiative, driven by Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration, aims to mark his first 100 days in office with tangible improvements to the State’s education sector.
The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Barr. Mrs Onomen Goodness Briggs, confirmed that the projects are at various stages of completion and are on track to be delivered within the next three weeks. She made this known during an inspection tour of school sites in Oredo and Egor Local Government Areas on Monday.
Among the institutions visited were Ebo Primary School in Ebo-Iyekogba, where a new block of six classrooms and an office are under construction, and Ore-Oghene Primary School, which is benefiting from a new four-classroom block alongside the renovation of an existing five-classroom structure. Other schools under renovation include Evbareke Junior Secondary School, Useh Junior School, and Okhokhugbo Primary School, all of which are receiving upgraded classrooms, office spaces, storage areas, and toilet facilities.
Briggs assured that, upon completion, the schools would be furnished with desks and tables to create a more conducive learning environment. She also highlighted the government’s commitment to safeguarding school infrastructure, revealing plans to erect perimeter fences, establish security posts, and deploy personnel to protect school facilities from vandalism.
Additionally, the state is set to engage community leaders, School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) members, and other stakeholders in sensitisation efforts to encourage local ownership and protection of school properties.
Briggs was accompanied on the inspection by key SUBEB officials, including Hon. Pst. Mrs Angela Ekiuwa Okpamen, the Board Member representing Edo South, and other senior project officers. The inspection of ongoing projects is set to continue in the coming days.
