A teenage boy has tragically lost his life in Edo State while testing the alleged powers of a bulletproof charm.
The deceased, identified as Emmanuel Okonkwo, a resident of Ubiaja town in Esan South East Local Government Area, reportedly died following a ritualistic procedure led by a self-styled native doctor, Amechi Edozunor, and an accomplice, Kelvin Ugwu.
A police source told Uptown Press Nigeria that the horrific incident unfolded when the native doctor allegedly made incisions on the boy’s body as part of a fortification ritual. The ritual, they claimed, was meant to render him immune to death by gunshot, broken bottles, or other deadly weapons.
But the unthinkable happened when, in a twisted attempt to “prove” the charm’s effectiveness, the teenager was struck on the head with a glass bottle. The blow caused catastrophic injuries, leading to his eventual death days later in the hospital.
Local residents raised the alarm following the botched ritual, prompting officers from a nearby police division to storm Iyamon Village, Ubiaja, where they arrested the two men allegedly involved in the ritual killing.
The teenager’s elder brother, known simply as Onyenbushi, filed an official complaint with the police on 2 April. Emmanuel was initially taken to Wisdom Hospital before being transferred to Ogbeide Hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries on 5 April 2025.
Police authorities have confirmed that an investigation into the incident is currently underway, and the suspects will be charged in court as soon as the case file is ready.
“This is a deeply disturbing case,” said a senior police officer in Edo. “We are taking this matter seriously and will ensure that justice is served.”
As the investigation unfolds, one thing remains painfully clear: what was meant to be a ‘proof’ of invincibility has instead ended in an irreversible loss, cutting short the life of a young man in a most senseless manner.
