A 100-level student of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has reportedly taken his own life after allegedly walking in on his girlfriend with another man at her hostel. The tragic incident is said to have occurred on Wednesday, 16 April.
According to multiple local media sources, the young student made an unannounced visit to his girlfriend’s residence at the Ghana Universities Staff Superannuation Scheme (GUSSS) Hall Two. Upon arrival, he is said to have found her in bed with another male student, a discovery that reportedly left him so traumatised that he fainted on the spot.
Eyewitnesses claimed he had to be carried back to his hostel by concerned students who witnessed the incident. However, shortly after regaining consciousness, he allegedly took his own life by hanging.
A distressing video circulating widely on social media shows university officials and police personnel retrieving the body from the hostel premises, with visible shock and sadness from onlookers.
Many social media users have mourned the tragic loss, describing the incident as deeply heart-breaking and preventable. Others have used the opportunity to call for increased mental health support for students and youth, urging them to seek help in times of emotional crisis instead of resorting to self-harm.
One online user wrote, “This is not how it should have ended. No relationship is worth a life. Let’s learn to talk to people and not bottle everything in.” Another commenter added, “Universities should do more in providing psychological and emotional support for students. This is truly a tragedy.”
As of the time of reporting, UEW is yet to issue an official statement on the matter. However, the Ghana Police Service has confirmed that a full investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the young man’s death.
Mental health advocates have since reiterated the importance of accessible counselling services on campuses and encouraged young people to speak up when in distress.
