A Nigerian-born dentist has been tragically shot dead following a confrontation over loud music at an apartment complex in northern Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Dr Akintunde Bowden, 41, was fatally wounded on 19 April 2025 after reportedly asking his neighbour, Keionna McGowan, 27, to lower the volume of her music. According to a criminal complaint reviewed by WISN 12 News, McGowan reacted angrily when Bowden knocked on her door to request that she reduce the noise level.
McGowan informed police that she perceived Bowden to be acting aggressively and suspected he was intoxicated. She claimed she initially offered to lower the music and closed the door, but alleged that Bowden kicked it. In response, she retrieved a firearm, reopened the door, and fired a shot as Bowden allegedly attempted to kick the door again.
Emergency services from the Brown Deer Police Department responded promptly to the scene after reports of an altercation. On arrival, officers found McGowan outside the Park Plaza Court apartment building, shouting that Bowden was “in [her] house, number 207”. Bowden was discovered lying face down outside her doorway and was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy conducted by the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office revealed that Dr Bowden died from a single gunshot wound to his lower abdomen.
McGowan has been charged with second-degree reckless homicide with the use of a dangerous weapon. She is currently in custody, with a preliminary court hearing scheduled for 5 May.
Milwaukee Health Services, where Bowden practised dentistry, released a statement expressing their profound sorrow, describing his loss as “extremely impactful.” They added: “His leadership, compassion, and vibrant personality will forever remain in our hearts.”
Dr Bowden’s family has also spoken out about their loss. His brothers, Adeniji and Ogbonna Bowden, who are themselves dentists, paid tribute to him as a compassionate and dedicated professional. Speaking to CBS 58 News, Ogbonna said, “He always reached for people that didn’t have as much.” Adeniji added with emotion, “You know, I never thought that the last time I saw my brother would be the last time I saw my brother.”
