Edo State Forestry Commission Partners with IDH NISCOPS to revolutionise sustainable oil-palm production

The Edo State Forestry Commission has indicated its willingness to collaborate with the IDH Sustainable Trade Initiative’s National Initiatives for Sustainable and Climate-Smart Oil-Palm Smallholders (NISCOPS) to promote sustainable oil-palm production in the state.

This was made known during a courtesy visit by the Program Officer of IDH NISCOPS, Mr. Augustine Ninyio, and the Senior Program Manager of IDH NISCOPS, Mr. Abraham Ogwu, to the office of the Chairman of the Edo State Forestry Commission.

During the meeting, discussions centered on the importance of sustainable oil-palm production and its impact on the environment, livelihoods, and local communities. The possibility of collaborating on initiatives that support smallholder farmers in Nigeria was also explored.

The Chairman of the Edo State Forestry Commission expressed enthusiasm about the potential partnership, stating that it aligns with the commission’s goals of promoting sustainable forestry practices and improving the livelihoods of farmers.

The Chairman also thanked the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for always providing the necessary support for the initiative. He expressed the state government’s readiness to partner with the public and private sectors towards achieving sustainable oil-palm production in the state.

NISCOPS is a long-term engagement between key palm-oil producer and consumer countries, complementing market-driven, supply chain initiatives in palm-oil producing countries. The initiative aims to promote sustainable and climate-resilient practices among smallholder oil-palm farmers.
