Former President Muhammadu Buhari has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for initiating what he termed “difficult but necessary” economic reforms, while appealing to Nigerians for continued patience and support during the country’s challenging transition period.
In a statement released on Wednesday through his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, Buhari expressed his full support for the direction of Tinubu’s administration, emphasising that internal political pressures must not derail the current reforms.
“These are essential measures for Nigeria’s long-term stability and prosperity,” Buhari stated, acknowledging the economic strain many citizens—particularly the most vulnerable—are currently facing.
He urged the public to remain steadfast, noting that while the reforms are causing hardship in the short term, they are designed to address deep-rooted structural issues that have long hindered the nation’s progress.
“Meaningful change does not happen overnight,” he said. “The pain many are feeling today has a purpose. It is part of the journey towards a stronger and more self-reliant Nigeria.”
Buhari also stressed that tackling problems such as poverty and inflation should not be the responsibility of the government alone. He called for collective action from the private sector and ordinary citizens alike, encouraging all Nigerians to contribute positively to national development.
Despite the prevailing economic challenges, the former president urged the public to remain hopeful and confident in the nation’s future. He concluded by congratulating President Tinubu on marking his second year in office and wished him continued wisdom and compassion in his leadership.
President Tinubu’s administration has faced criticism over policy decisions, including the removal of fuel subsidies and currency reforms, which have led to a rise in living costs. However, the government maintains that these measures are crucial to revitalising the economy.
