A property owner in Okhenmwenre Community, Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State, Mr Benjamin Iwhotu, has issued a passionate plea to the Edo State Governor, Mr Monday Okpebholo, the Commissioner of Police, and the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, following the sudden demolition of his house by unidentified men in military uniforms.
Mr Iwhotu, who was visibly emotional while showing journalists the ruins of his property, lamented that he had lawfully acquired the land from the traditional ruler of the community and met all necessary conditions. He explained that although he did not reside in the house, his elder brother lived there.
Narrating the incident, Iwhotu said he was shocked to receive a distress call from his brother, informing him that armed men dressed in military attire stormed the property, forced him to sit on the ground, and proceeded to demolish parts of the house, including the perimeter fence. According to Iwhotu, no reason was given for the destruction, and he was not contacted beforehand.
“If I had been invited or informed about any issue concerning the building, I would have known how to respond. But to wake up and find my property destroyed without explanation is heartbreaking,” he said.
Appealing for justice, Iwhotu called on the government, civil society organisations, and the general public to intervene. “I don’t know what I have done to deserve this. I am calling on well-meaning Nigerians, Governor Okpebholo, the Commissioner of Police, and our revered Oba of Benin to come to my aid. I have a wife and children — where do I start from?” he cried.
Residents of the community have expressed concern over the incident, calling on the authorities to investigate the matter and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
