The Edo State Government has extended its clampdown on cult-related activities to Edo North axis of the State, Auchi, the headquarters of Etsako West and South Ibie a neighbouring Community, in a decisive move to curb the menace of cultism across the state.
On Thursday, government-backed enforcement teams carried out demolition exercises in parts of Auchi, targeting properties allegedly linked to suspected cultists. The action follows a recent resurgence of cult clashes in the two Communities that claimed the life of a local barber and left two others injured with gunshot wounds.
On Assumtion in Office Governor Monday Okpebholo had earlier issued a stern warning to cultists, urging them to renounce their activities or leave the state.
In the past, similar demolitions were carried out in Benin City, the state capital, to deter property owners from providing shelter to individuals involved in cult-related violence.
Community members say the move to Auchi and South Ibie may have been triggered by Tuesday’s bloody clash, which reignited concerns about the growing spread of cult violence in Edo North.
The government insists that the demolition campaign is part of a broader strategy to restore peace and security, while also holding property owners accountable for aiding or harboring cult groups.
Residents in Auchi and South Ibie Iyakpi surrounding communities are watching developments closely, with many hopeful that the governor’s tough stance will help reduce the spate of violence that has gripped the region in recent months.
