Senator representing Edo South, Neda Imasuen, has hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to lift the six-month emergency rule in Rivers State, describing it as a “victory for democracy” and a move that could reshape the political landscape ahead of 2027.
Tinubu on Wednesday ordered the reinstatement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, who were suspended on 18 March after a bitter political crisis paralysed governance in the oil-rich State. Retired Naval Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas had been installed as administrator during the emergency rule.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his Media Aide, Moshood Karim, and made available to journalists in Benin City, Senator Imasuen said the decision had restored hope for the people of Rivers, adding that it would pave the way for peace, development, and stability.
“The return of democratic governance in Rivers is not only a relief to its citizens but also a demonstration of President Tinubu’s political will to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy,” Imasuen said.
Tinubu had invoked Section 305(5) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to impose emergency rule, citing the breakdown of order and deepening power tussle that had crippled the legislature since 2023.
Political analysts say the lifting of emergency rule underscores Tinubu’s growing influence in the Niger Delta, a strategic region for both oil revenue and electoral dominance. With the reinstatement of Fubara and his allies, the President is seen as consolidating political goodwill that could prove crucial as the countdown to the 2027 general election begins.
