The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has a new acting chairman following the completion of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu’s second and final tenure as head of the electoral body.
After ten years at the helm, Prof. Yakubu on Tuesday officially handed over to Mrs May Agbamuche-Mbu, a National Commissioner, who will serve as Acting Chairman pending the appointment of a substantive chairman by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The brief handover ceremony took place during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Prof. Yakubu, who first assumed office in 2015, oversaw two general elections — in 2019 and 2023— and multiple off-season polls, earning a reputation for introducing major electoral reforms and expanding the use of technology in Nigeria’s voting process.
Agbamuche-Mbu, a lawyer and former publisher, will now steer the affairs of the commission in an acting capacity as the search for Yakubu’s successor begins.
Her assumption marks the start of a new chapter for INEC, as stakeholders look ahead to the next cycle of electoral reforms and preparations for the 2027 general elections.
