President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, CON, has charged the newly inaugurated South South Development Commission (SSDC) to prioritise people-centred projects and deliver visible results that will transform the lives of citizens across the region.

Senator Akpabio made the call while receiving the SSDC board and management, led by its Chairman, Rt. Hon. Chibudom Nwuche, during a courtesy visit in Abuja. The meeting, described as a strategic step towards deepening collaboration between the National Assembly and the Commission, focused on fast-tracking development in the South South region.

In a statement issued by Amb. Musa Muhammed Tsoken, National Coordinator of the Asiwaju Again Renewed Hope Initiative 2027 and National President of the APC Initiative for Good Governance (APC-IGG), the Senate President commended the SSDC’s leadership for its commitment to regional progress and urged them to maintain focus on projects that directly impact communities.

Akpabio stressed that the Commission must pursue its mandate with transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness, particularly in key sectors such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, and youth empowerment.

He further advised the board to align its programmes with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to drive sustainable development, economic diversification, and social welfare nationwide.

Reaffirming the Senate’s readiness to support the SSDC legislatively, Senator Akpabio said the South South region has the potential to become a hub of economic growth and national prosperity if its resources and human capital are effectively harnessed.

He concluded by urging the Commission’s leadership to deliver results that reflect the aspirations of the people, noting that “true development is measured not by plans on paper, but by the positive changes felt in the lives of citizens.”
