The Edo State Police Command has raised alarm over a new wave of criminal activity involving fake bomb threats aimed at extorting money from unsuspecting individuals, business owners, and corporate organisations across the State.

According to a statement signed by ASP Eno Ikoedem, Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, the perpetrators contact victims anonymously, claiming that explosive devices have been planted within their premises and demanding payment to prevent detonation.

The Command described the threats as “clear attempts at extortion through fear and intimidation” and confirmed that investigations into reported cases are already underway.

Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, has ordered the immediate deployment of specialised units — including the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, Intelligence Bureau, and Tactical Teams — to swiftly respond to any reported threats and ensure the safety of residents.

The police further assured the public of their readiness, stating that the Command’s Explosive Ordnance Department is well-equipped to detect and neutralise any explosive materials if necessary.

Residents have been urged not to panic or comply with any financial demands from such callers, but to report all suspicious messages, calls, or activities to the nearest police station or the Command’s Control Room via 08077773721 or 08037646272.

The Command also warned against spreading unverified information that could cause unnecessary panic, urging the public to “remain vigilant and report any suspicious persons, objects, or movements.”

ASP Ikoedem reaffirmed the police’s commitment to protecting lives, property, and economic activities in Edo State, calling for continued cooperation from citizens.
