Speculations on Nigeria’s social media community has it that controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Gumi has fled Nigeria to Turkey over fear of arrest by the Nigerian government.

There have been calls for sheikh Gumi’s arrest due to his controversial stance on banditry and terrorism in Nigeria. The Islamic cleric who attained the rank of a captain in the Nigerian army before his retirement is known for his usual defense of bandits and banditry activities.

He has severally served as a negotiator between Nigeria’s local authority and armed bandits.

Following Trump’s threat of routing terrorism via military intervention in Nigeria, Sheikh Gumi vehemently rejected the idea, pointing out that such an operation would further worsen Nigeria’s security challenges.

He suggested that negotiating with the armed bandits is the most veritable way to solving Nigeria’s security issues.

Based on his characteristic defending of bandits, many have grown suspicious of the Islamic cleric while some have openly called for the president Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government to arrest him for questioning over his link to armed bandits.
