The President of the Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (NIEEE), Engr. Felix O. Olu, FNIEEE, led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the Director-General/CEO of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Chief Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin, at the Council’s Headquarters in Abuja on 14th November 2025.
During the visit, Engr. Olu highlighted the Institute’s role as a leading professional engineering body with over 15,000 members and 36 chapters nationwide, specializing in key fields such as power, renewable energy, ICT, automation, digital technologies, and emerging innovations. He also outlined the Institute’s six specialized professional sections and reaffirmed NIEEE’s commitment to capacity building through trainings, conferences, technical visits, and advocacy.
The delegation commended the NADDC for its efforts to promote new automotive technologies, including electric vehicles, CNG fuel conversion, and automotive electronics. They emphasized the need for collaboration to further address skill gaps among technicians and support the growing adoption of advanced automotive technologies in Nigeria. The NIEEE also requested the Council’s participation in an upcoming national webinar to educate members on automotive policies and emerging opportunities.
In his response, the Director-General of the NADDC, Chief Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin, highlighted several technical challenges currently facing Nigeria’s automotive industry, particularly in the electrical and electronic aspects of electric vehicles (EVs). He called on professional bodies such as the NIEEE to collaborate in addressing these challenges and strengthening the technical capacity required for the country’s automotive transition.
He further emphasized the need for the Institute to work on domesticating the electrical and electronic components of EV technologies to ensure local adaptability, maintenance capacity, and sustainability.
The DG also stressed the importance of partnering with the NIEEE on renewable energy systems, including battery storage solutions, charging infrastructure development, and the establishment of charging standards—key components necessary for Nigeria’s emerging electric mobility ecosystem.
In addition, Osinipin expressed Council’s readiness to partner with NIEEE in training, technical development, research support as well as support in fast tracking the development and adoption of earthing standards in conjunction with the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON)
The visit concluded with a shared commitment by both institutions to deepen collaboration and drive the advancement of Nigeria’s automotive and engineering sectors through innovation, capacity building, and sustainable technology adoption.
