President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a nationwide security emergency, unveiling sweeping measures that include the immediate recruitment of tens of thousands of additional police and military personnel in a dramatic bid to stem Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.
In a nationwide address, the President authorised the Nigeria Police Force to recruit an additional 20,000 officers, raising its strength to 50,000 personnel, while ordering expanded recruitment across the Armed Forces to confront rising threats from banditry, terrorism and violent criminal networks.
As part of the emergency measures, the President directed that National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps across the country be converted into temporary police training depots to fast-track preparations for new recruits. He also ordered the immediate withdrawal of police officers from VIP guard duties, directing them to undergo crash retraining before being redeployed to security flashpoints.
The Department of State Services (DSS) was authorised to begin the immediate deployment of trained forest guards nationwide to flush out terrorists and bandits hiding in Nigeria’s forests, alongside fresh recruitment to strengthen surveillance and territorial control.
“There will be no more hiding places for agents of evil,” the President declared, stressing that the nation was confronting a moment of grave national danger requiring urgent and unified action.
President Tinubu described the situation as a “national emergency” and called on citizens to play active roles in safeguarding their communities, urging what he termed an “all hands on deck” approach to national security.
He commended the Armed Forces and security agencies for their joint operations that led to the rescue of 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi State and 38 worshippers in Kwara State, while vowing to intensify efforts to secure the release of students abducted from a Catholic school in Niger State and other Nigerians still in captivity.
Addressing military personnel directly, the President praised their courage and sacrifice, charging them to demonstrate renewed discipline, professionalism and integrity.
“There must be no compromise, no collusion, and no negligence,” he warned, insisting that restoring peace across all troubled regions remained a top national priority.
The sweeping declaration signals one of the boldest security overhauls of Tinubu’s presidency, as pressure mounts on the Federal Government to halt the nation’s spiralling security crisis.
