Nigeria is “getting to the end” of its security crisis, Senator Neda Imasuen has declared, insisting that a coordinated surge in national awareness and government action is bringing the country closer to defeating kidnapping and banditry.
Speaking with journalists in Abuja, the Senator representing Edo South said the recent escalation in abductions, particularly following United States President Donald Trump’s threat of military action against Nigeria, had only strengthened the resolve of Federal and State authorities, communities and security agencies to end the menace.
Imasuen argued that the heightened public vigilance now sweeping across the country would become the “driving force” that finally halts banditry and other violent crimes.
However, he acknowledged that Trump’s 31 October warning of possible US intervention over the “killing of Christians” had intensified insecurity in recent weeks, with multiple States witnessing a spike in kidnappings. Kwara and Kogi have recorded at least five cases combined, while dozens of schoolchildren were abducted in Niger and Kebbi States — although those taken in Kebbi have since been released.
“The pronouncement by the US government has given it a different dimension,” he said. “This issue has been with us for years, but it sharply heightened because they said they will invade Nigeria. Now they say they are coming — we don’t want their soldiers here. We want cooperation in intelligence-sharing, surveillance and other support.”
Despite the uptick, Imasuen insisted that the criminal networks fuelling the crisis are running out of space to operate.
“We are getting to the end of this issue,” he stressed. “Either way it goes, this situation we are in now is going to determine where we are heading. I know that at the end of the day the country will remain solid and united. We will weather the storm.”
He disclosed that the Senate is intensifying efforts to confront the crisis through legislation, oversight and ongoing debates on national security. Recent parliamentary discussions, he said, have set the chamber on the “right path” to strengthening Nigeria’s response.
According to him, lawmakers are committed to constitutional amendments, new laws and improved oversight intended to bolster the fight against insurgency, restore public confidence and help drive Nigeria toward a more secure future.
