President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, describing him as an eminent jurist whose life was defined by integrity, discipline and unwavering devotion to justice.
Justice Tanko, who served as Chief Justice of Nigeria from 2019 to 2022, died on Tuesday at the age of 71 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He hailed from Bauchi State.
In a condolence message, President Tinubu said the late jurist was a distinguished legal mind and a disciplined administrator who dedicated the greater part of his life to strengthening Nigeria’s judiciary and upholding the rule of law.
The President noted that Justice Tanko’s long and distinguished career on the Bench, which culminated in his elevation to the nation’s highest judicial office, was marked by courage, professionalism and an enduring commitment to justice.
According to him, the former Chief Justice made invaluable contributions to the development of Nigeria’s legal system, adding that his legacy would remain indelible, particularly among the many judges and lawyers he mentored over the years.
President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, the Supreme Court of Nigeria, members of the Bar and the Bench, as well as the government and people of Bauchi State.
He also prayed to Almighty Allah to grant the departed jurist eternal rest and comfort all those mourning his passing.
The condolence message was issued on December 16, 2025, by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga.
