Edo Police Pledge Intensified Patrols in Ekpoma After Students Raise Alarm

The Edo State Police Command has pledged to intensify patrols and launch vigorous security operations in and around Ekpoma following growing concerns over kidnapping incidents affecting students and residents of the university town.

The assurance was given by the Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika during a courtesy visit by the President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), Ambrose Alli University who met with the police chief on Friday to discuss the deteriorating security situation, particularly the recent spate of abductions that has unsettled the academic community.

According to the Students’ Union, the Commissioner confirmed that the Command is fully aware of the security challenges in Ekpoma and is already taking proactive steps to curb kidnapping and other criminal activities. He assured that constant patrols, stop-and-search operations and intelligence-led raids would be stepped up to restore calm and guarantee the safety of students and indigenes.

The police boss also addressed the reported kidnapping of a student earlier in the day, describing the incident as “unfortunate” and confirming that security operatives have been mobilised. He disclosed that intelligence gathering is ongoing and that the Command has deployed the necessary resources to secure the victim’s safe release and bring those responsible to justice.

In a statement issued after the meeting, the Students’ Union Government reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and welfare of students, stressing that it would continue to engage security agencies and other relevant authorities until lasting peace is achieved in Ekpoma.

The latest intervention comes amid heightened anxiety among residents, with student leaders urging vigilance while calling on security agencies to act decisively to stem the rising tide of insecurity in the area.
