The Edo State Government, through the Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EdoSEMA), in partnership with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the destruction caused by a recent rainstorm in Atteh Community, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.
Leading the assessment team, the Member representing Akoko-Edo Constituency II in the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Donald Okogbe, said the violent storm, accompanied by strong winds, wreaked havoc on homes and public infrastructure, displaced families and cut off electricity supply in the community.
Officials from EdoSEMA and NEMA inspected damaged buildings and engaged residents to determine the scale of losses. EdoSEMA Executive Secretary, Hon. Jerry Idahosa, disclosed that preliminary findings showed extensive damage, including roofs blown off houses, partially collapsed structures and the destruction of electricity facilities. He revealed that about 10 to 12 high-tension poles were either uprooted or severely damaged, plunging the community into darkness.
While noting that several livelihoods were disrupted, Idahosa expressed gratitude that no lives were lost, assuring residents of the state government’s commitment to swift relief and recovery measures to restore normalcy.
Hon. Okogbe assured the community that urgent steps were already underway to restore electricity, including temporary repairs pending full intervention by EdoSEMA and NEMA. He also highlighted the long-standing problem of poor road access to Atteh, which he said continues to hinder emergency response and development.
The Community leaders praised the prompt response of the state government and emergency agencies, describing the visit as timely and reassuring. They reiterated the community’s appeal for improved road infrastructure.
Beyond the emergency visit, Hon. Okogbe unveiled plans for a multi-purpose ICT hub to empower youths with digital and vocational skills, featuring free Starlink-powered internet, training facilities and creative production units. As immediate support, he donated electric poles and announced a ₦1 million contribution to kick-start power restoration, while also pledging support for healthcare and education initiatives.
Residents commended the combined emergency response and development-focused interventions, describing them as impactful and forward-looking.
