The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to commemorate this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration across the country.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued on Monday and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani, in Abuja.
According to the Federal Government, the declaration of the two-day holiday underscores its recognition of the faith, spiritual values, and religious significance of Eid-el-Kabir to millions of Muslims in Nigeria and across the world.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslim faithful both within the country and in the diaspora as they prepare to celebrate the important Islamic festival.
He described Eid-el-Kabir as a sacred occasion symbolizing sacrifice, obedience to God, love, and compassion for humanity.
The minister urged Nigerians to use the festive period for prayers, peaceful reflection, and acts of kindness toward one another.
He also called on citizens to continue seeking divine guidance and support for Nigeria as the country strives toward lasting peace, improved security, unity, and economic prosperity.
Government offices, banks, and many private establishments are expected to observe the public holidays in line with the official declaration by the Federal Government
