The recent outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola Virus Disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), with reported spread into neighbouring Uganda, serves as a stark reminder that infectious diseases recognise no borders. In an era of increased international travel and cross-border movement, Nigeria cannot afford to lower its guard, and Edo State must remain vigilant in protecting its citizens from the threat of imported Ebola infections.
Although there is currently no confirmed case of Ebola in Nigeria, public health experts understand that preparedness is the most effective weapon against any potential outbreak. The movement of travellers from affected regions into various countries, including Nigeria, creates a pathway through which infectious diseases can spread if adequate surveillance and response systems are not in place.
Edo State has earned a reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading States in public health response and disease surveillance. However, past successes should not breed complacency. Instead, they should inspire renewed commitment to strengthening emergency preparedness mechanisms.
This is the time for Ebola emergency response teams and health authorities across the State to thoroughly review existing operational frameworks. Passenger movement monitoring systems at entry points must be assessed and strengthened where necessary. Infection prevention and control measures within health facilities should be revisited to ensure healthcare workers remain protected and capable of responding swiftly to suspected cases.
Equally important is the need to evaluate emergency preparedness protocols, including case detection procedures, isolation capacity, contact tracing mechanisms, laboratory readiness, and public risk communication strategies. Disease outbreaks are often won or lost in the earliest stages of detection and response.
There is also a compelling need for stronger collaboration between Edo State health authorities and sister health organisations at the national and international levels. Information sharing, joint preparedness exercises, coordinated surveillance efforts, and resource mobilisation can significantly improve the State’s ability to respond effectively should the need arise.
Nigeria’s successful containment of Ebola in 2014 remains one of the greatest public health achievements on the African continent. Faced with a potentially devastating outbreak following the arrival of an infected traveller, health authorities acted decisively. Through rapid contact tracing, aggressive surveillance, public awareness campaigns, and coordinated leadership, the country prevented what could have become a national catastrophe.
That historic victory demonstrated that preparedness, discipline, and swift action can stop even the most dangerous infectious diseases in their tracks. The lessons from 2014 must continue to guide current efforts.
For Edo State, the goal should not be merely reacting to an outbreak if it occurs. The goal must be preventing one from taking root in the first place. This requires sustained investment in surveillance systems, continuous training of healthcare personnel, regular simulation exercises, and unwavering public health vigilance.
Preparedness must remain a constant priority to ensure that Edo residents remain protected from the threat of Ebola. The cost of prevention is always lower than the cost of response.
As the old saying goes, “A wise ruler takes precaution and advice.” In the face of emerging health threats, those words remain as relevant today as ever. Vigilance, preparedness, and proactive leadership are the safeguards that will keep Edo State and its people safe.
