Sports journalist and media consultant, Shehu Momodu, has hailed the announcement of a N1 billion financial package for the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), describing it as a game-changing intervention capable of transforming domestic football in Nigeria.
Momodu, who is the Chief Executive Officer of MS Global Communication, expressed excitement over the development while speaking with journalists at an event in Benin City.
The financial commitment, unveiled through a partnership between the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), is expected to boost the 2026/2027 NPFL season and enhance the competitiveness of the domestic league.
Reacting to the announcement, Momodu said the investment signals a new era for Nigerian football and offers fresh hope for local players and clubs.
“When I heard the news, I was very happy. At least our league is set on the path of greatness. It is a huge boost for our domestic players and teams participating in the league,” he said.
The former Media Officer of Dynamite Force FC noted that adequate funding remains one of the key ingredients required to elevate the standard of the Nigerian league and attract greater local and international attention.
He, however, stressed that financial support alone would not guarantee success unless stakeholders uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.
Momodu called on the Nigeria Football Federation, the Nigeria Referees Association, football clubs and supporters to play their respective roles in ensuring the league remains credible and attractive.
“They should play by the rules at all times. The NFF should ensure transparency, while referees must guarantee quality officiating in order to make the league attractive to football lovers across the country,” he stated.
He also urged football fans and club supporters to embrace sportsmanship and avoid actions capable of tarnishing the image of the league.
According to him, transparency, fair officiating and discipline among stakeholders would encourage more corporate organisations and international investors to support Nigerian football.
“With all these, the league will continue to attract sponsors from within and outside the country. The N1 billion windfall is a welcome development,” he added.
Momodu further commended the leadership of the National Sports Commission under Shehu Dikko and the Nigeria Football Federation led by Ibrahim Gusau for initiating what he described as a landmark intervention for the growth of the domestic game.
