Nigeria’s Super Falcons delivered a breathtaking attacking masterclass on Wednesday night, thrashing Egypt 6-2 to book a commanding place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The record ten-time African champions were in irresistible form, tearing apart the Egyptian defence with clinical finishing and relentless attacking football to underline their determination to reclaim the continental crown.
Asisat Oshoala opened the floodgates in the 21st minute from the penalty spot before Gift Monday doubled Nigeria’s advantage deep into first-half stoppage time. Egypt pulled one back through Ghazi’s penalty in the 45+10th minute to head into the break trailing 2-1.
The Super Falcons resumed the second half with renewed intensity as Uchenna Kanu restored Nigeria’s two-goal cushion in the 57th minute. Christy Ucheibe calmly converted another penalty in the 81st minute before Ghazi grabbed her second goal for Egypt three minutes later to briefly reduce the deficit.
However, Nigeria refused to ease off. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade converted a late penalty in stoppage time before Joy Omewa completed the rout to seal a resounding 6-2 victory.
The emphatic win showcased the Falcons’ attacking depth, composure and championship pedigree as they overwhelmed a resilient Egyptian side in one of the tournament’s most entertaining encounters.
With the victory, the Super Falcons march confidently into the WAFCON 2026 quarter-finals, sending a strong warning to the remaining contenders that Africa’s most successful women’s football team remains firmly on course for an unprecedented 11th continental title.
