Education Ministry Unveils Learner Biometrics, Edo-Cert Platforms on Strengthening Digital Education

The Edo State Ministry of Education has intensified efforts to strengthen digital education management with the introduction of a comprehensive learner biometric database and the Edo-Cert platform for seamless access to digital education certificates.
The initiatives were showcased at a stakeholders’ engagement, which held at the John Odigie-Oyegun Public Service Academy in Benin City, as part of the Ministry’s efforts to improve data collection, educational planning and access to digital services across public and private schools in the State.
According to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Sir Enodolomwanyi Otamere, the learner biometric initiative is designed to provide government with accurate and verifiable data on learners to support effective educational planning, policy implementation, resource allocation, while the Edo-Cert platform is expected to provide learners, parents and schools with convenient online access to digital education certificates to improved service delivery.
In his opening remarks, the Permanent Secretary commended stakeholders for prioritising the education and wellbeing of children in Edo State. He stressed the importance of reliable data to effective governance, noting that accurate information was essential for government to make informed decisions and plan effectively for the education sector. “As we all know, today we are demonstrating the importance of data management. Without data, no responsible government will be able to plan effectively,” he said.
The Permanent Secretary urged participants to pay close attention to the presentations and live demonstrations by the Ministry’s Technical Partners, noting that their engagement would contribute to the successful adoption of the platforms. He appreciated all stakeholders for their participation and reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to advancing initiatives that promote effective education management and safeguard the academic progress and wellbeing of every learner in Edo State.
In a presentation on the Edo-Cert platform, Mr. Uyi Briggs took participants through its key features, including the portal, menu interface, tutorial video and regional dashboard. He explained that the platform was designed to simplify access to digital education certificates and improve the efficiency of certificate management within the State’s education system. It was disclosed that the platform would be accessed through ‘edocert.edostate.gov.ng,’ and was demonstrated live for participants to access and navigate its features using their mobile devices.
In a separate presentation, Mr. Olajide Kazeem took stakeholders through the Learner Identification Number and biometric system, where he highlighted key features of the platform to includ login access, data capture and biometric enrolment, explaining that the system would provide a reliable mechanism for identifying and tracking learners across the State. He asserted that the biometric database would strengthen regulation and enable the Ministry to maintain accurate records of learners throughout their educational journey.
Mr. Kazeem also highlighted the system’s capacity to support timely and progressive promotion of learners based on their continuous assessment records, thereby strengthening academic monitoring and decision-making.
The engagement featured a question-and-answer session during which participants raised concerns about data accessibility and the need to ensure that private school proprietors have adequate access to the platforms to enable them fully participate in the digital education system. The concerns were addressed by the Ministry and its Technical Partners, with clarifications provided on the operation and accessibility of the platforms.
The engagement brought together representatives of the Association of Private School Owners of Nigeria (APSON), the Association for Formidable Educational Development (AFED), the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), the Association of Montessori International Schools (AMIS) and officials of the Ministry of Education.
