Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has rewarded Edo Queens with ₦50 million for their outstanding achievement after winning the 2025/26 Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) and the 2026 WAFU-B Women’s Champions League titles.
Governor Okpebholo presented the financial reward to the victorious team as the Edo Queens returned home with two major trophies, commending the players for their determination, resilience and fighting spirit throughout their campaigns.
The Governor praised the team for putting Edo State firmly on the Nigerian and West African football map, while acknowledging the collective effort behind their remarkable double.
Edo Queens secured the 2025/26 NWFL title before going on to conquer the WAFU-B Women’s Champions League, completing a historic trophy haul.
In the WAFU-B final, Edo Queens were held to a 2-2 draw by Ghanaian side Ampem Darkoa Ladies before keeping their composure in the decisive penalty shootout, winning 4-1 on penalties to lift the regional title.
Governor Okpebholo also singled out the team’s goalkeeper, coaches and technical crew for their crucial contributions to the success, stressing that the achievement was the product of collective determination and disciplined preparation.
The ₦50 million reward is expected to further boost morale within the Edo Queens camp as the team continues to pursue greater success on the domestic and continental stages.
The Governor’s gesture underscores the Edo State Government’s recognition of women’s football and its commitment to rewarding sporting excellence in the state.
