Saudi Arabia has executed two Bangladeshi nationals convicted of committing a sexual act inside a mosque in the holy city of Mecca, according to the kingdom’s Ministry of Interior.
The ministry identified the executed individuals as Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar in an official statement announcing the executions.
Saudi authorities said the two were arrested following the incident, investigated and subsequently convicted before their execution.
The case has drawn attention because of the location of the alleged offence. Mecca is Islam’s holiest city, attracting millions of Muslim pilgrims annually.
