Professor Kamene Okonjo, mother of World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has died at the age of 96.
The renowned sociologist and women’s rights advocate reportedly died on Friday, according to a statement issued by the Umu Obi Obahai royal family of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom in Delta State.
Her death marks the loss of a distinguished academic whose work in sociology and advocacy for women’s rights earned her recognition.
Reacting to the development, Okonjo-Iweala took to her official X account on Sunday to thank friends and well-wishers for their condolence messages and support to her family.
The WTO chief’s acknowledgement of the messages followed the outpouring of sympathy over the death of her mother.
