Democrats have inflicted a crushing electoral defeat on President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, sweeping control of both chambers of the United States Congress in a stunning political upset.
The Democratic Party secured majorities in the House of Representatives and Senate following Tuesday’s midterm elections, dealing a significant blow to Trump’s administration and threatening to derail his legislative agenda during the final two years of his presidency.
The remarkable victory marks a dramatic shift in American politics, with Democrats recording major breakthroughs in traditionally Republican strongholds, including Kansas, Iowa, Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina and Ohio.
In Kansas, Democratic candidate and Methodist minister Adam Hamilton defeated Republican incumbent Senator Roger Marshall, becoming the first Democrat elected to represent the state in the US Senate since 1932.
In Iowa, Democrat Josh Turek defeated Republican Ashley Hinson, ending more than a decade of Republican control of both Senate seats in the state.
Texas also witnessed a political earthquake as Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton in the Senate race, while Democratic candidate Gina Hinojosa unseated three-term Republican Governor Greg Abbott, ending more than three decades of Republican control of the state’s governorship.
Democrats equally recorded significant victories in South Carolina and North Carolina, where Annie Andrews and Roy Cooper respectively secured Senate seats.
The party also flipped several Republican-held congressional seats across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Kentucky, Arizona and North Carolina, further strengthening its position in Washington.
Adding to the historic night, former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms emerged victorious in Georgia’s gubernatorial election, becoming the first Black woman elected governor in American history.
The election outcome reflects growing voter dissatisfaction with the rising cost of living, Trump’s controversial tariff policies, the war with Iran and mounting concerns over his administration’s leadership.
With control of both chambers, Democrats are now positioned to block key presidential proposals, reject certain appointments and launch congressional investigations into the Trump administration, including its policies and alleged misconduct.
Reacting to the outcome, Trump reportedly told The New York Times that he was prepared to accept the election results and work with Democrats. However, he later posted an image of a red baseball cap bearing the word “VETO” on social media, signalling his readiness to oppose Democratic-backed legislation.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries described the outcome as a major setback for Trump’s MAGA movement.
The Democratic takeover marks the party’s return to full control of Congress for the first time since 2023, setting the stage for an intense political showdown in Washington as Trump enters the final stretch of his second presidential term.
