Derek Izedonmwen, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for the Edo State Governorship Election slated for September 21, 2024, has strongly condemned recent violent attacks allegedly orchestrated by his opponents.
The incidents involved private cabs displaying his campaign posters and stickers along Airport Road in Benin City.
In a statement personally signed by Mr. Izedonmwen, he recounted that the vehicles were vandalized by armed thugs affiliated with his political rivals, with one driver sustaining severe injuries from the assault. He further highlighted a separate tragic event on the same road where armed supporters of the opposition clashed violently with a convoy of the Edo APC gubernatorial candidate, Mr. Monday Okpebholo. This confrontation led to the loss of life and multiple injuries.
Mr. Izedonmwen described these acts of violence as severe assaults on the nation’s democratic principles and the peace of Edo State. He called upon Governor Godwin Obaseki, as the Chief Security Officer of Edo State, to take immediate action to ensure the safety and security of all citizens, regardless of their political affiliations.
Expressing his deepest sympathies, Mr. Izedonmwen extended his gratitude to the voters and supporters of the ADC for their unwavering support amid these challenges. He praised their courage and commitment to change, which inspires him and others to continue their campaign with renewed determination. He emphasized the importance of standing with the people and upholding the dignity and honor of Edo State.
The ADC candidate’s appeal comes as tensions rise in the lead-up to the highly anticipated governorship election, with all parties urged to prioritize peace and democratic values.
