Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a dramatic move that threatens to upend the political landscape ahead of the 2026 governorship election.
In a letter dated 4 November 2025 and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ward 2, Sagba Abogunde, in Ede North Local Government Area, Adeleke said he was leaving the party “with immediate effect” due to what he described as “the current crisis within the national leadership of the PDP.”
The governor expressed gratitude to the party for backing his rise to the Senate, where he represented Osun West, and for his eventual election as governor. His resignation was confirmed in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed.
The development has thrown the PDP’s preparations for the 2026 governorship election into turmoil. The party leadership in Osun announced on Monday that the governorship primary, earlier scheduled for Tuesday, 2 December 2025, could no longer hold as planned due to internal disputes and the uncertainty surrounding Adeleke’s political future.
Speaking at a press briefing in Osogbo, State PDP Chairman Sunday Bisi acknowledged that Adeleke had met all the requirements for seeking the party’s nomination. According to him, the governor “purchased and submitted the expression of interest and nomination forms within the stipulated window of October 13th to 25th, 2025,” appeared before the screening committee on 30 October, and was duly cleared.
Bisi, however, admitted that the unresolved crisis within the party — which must be settled and recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission within its timeline — has stalled the entire process. He noted that Adeleke’s withdrawal from the party raises fresh questions about whether he will contest the 2026 election at all, although he suggested the governor’s decision could still change if the PDP resolves its internal issues.
With the primaries suspended and the governor’s political trajectory unclear, the PDP now faces the very real prospect of entering the 2026 race deeply weakened — or without its most recognisable candidate.
