Benin City- In a bid to foster sustainable development, the Afemai Descendants Forum (ADF) has called on the six Local Government Areas that constitute the Edo North Senatorial District to collaborate closely.
This appeal was made during the forum’s inaugural press briefing held on Saturday in Benin City.
Comrade John Aidenomo, President of the ADF, emphasized the critical need for unity and cooperation among the Local Government Areas—Akoko-Edo, Etsako Central, Etsako East, Etsako West, Owan East, and Owan West—to achieve significant human capital development, particularly focusing on the youth.
Highlighting the forum’s mission which was established in February, 2015, Aidenomo said: “The Afemai Descendants Forum is dedicated to the unity, growth, and development of Afemai. Our non-political stance underscores our commitment to good governance and quality leadership, aimed at building an egalitarian Edo State.”
The ADF aims to support grassroots development and enhance the quality of life for the region’s residents. Aidenomo outlined the forum’s objectives, which include unifying the Afemai people, attracting government attention, investing in local projects, and eradicating poverty in the region.
He also noted the forum’s intent to remain apolitical, serving as a watchdog to ensure that political leaders deliver on their promises. “We will scrutinize candidates’ manifestos during election cycles to inform our support and advocacy,” he added.
He said that later in the year, there will be a grand launch of the forum while extending condolences to the victims of the recent Jattu-market disaster.
In his remark, Asekokhai Micheal, Secretary general noted that, the Forum’s missioon is to alleviate poverty among the teeming youth population occasioned by unemployment while partnering with the public to drive its vision.
Also speaking, the Public Relations Ofiicer of the Forum, Victor Oshioke announced the forum’s planned investment in agriculture in Afemai land.
This initiative is expected to not only enhance food security but also provide a sustainable livelihood for local farmers.
According to him, “We will liaise with stakeholders to address insecurity, ensuring that farmers can work without fear of harassment.”
This effort includes engaging government officials, religious leaders, traditional rulers, and local vigilante groups.
Obogai Maureen Akika, the Director of Socials, underscored the importance of cooperation among the Afemai people to achieve these goals.
The forum’s comprehensive approach aims to tackle both economic and security challenges, paving the way for a prosperous and unified Edo North.
Uptown Press reports that, the Afemai region, located in the northern part of Edo State, has a rich history dating back to the migration of its people from Benin between the 13th and 15th centuries.
Today, the six Local Government Areas that make up this region are working towards a future where development and unity go hand in hand, guided by the vision and efforts of the Afemai Descendants Forum.
